Thoughts...

Ok, so now that the deed is indeed done and we as a country have "made history," I've begun to hear from several different political analysts and supporters a comparison of Barack Obama to Abraham Lincoln.  Technically there is not much other than their similar background, rise in youth and origin in obscurity.  Both of them had messages based in "change."  But how similar is it really beyond that point?  Let's see what Honest Abe had to say about it...

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

I want to have faith in Obama's change.  I am not as certain as other "conservatives" that it's the end of the world because Obama is president elect.  I, to be honest, wouldn't even really call myself a Republican nowadays because of how many times we've seen Republican "conservative" politicians involved in ridiculous scandals where they've taken horrible advantage of their positions.  But one thing I do hope for is that this "spread the wealth" economic plan does not do exactly that which Lincoln here is counseling against.  I don't want to be taxed someday because I make money in order to pay for the life of those who don't.  I've seen personally too many welfare families to believe they just plain can't do anything about their poverty.  I don't buy that.

"Socialism" or not...  I can't say I have too much faith in the system yet...

I too am hoping that this "World President" as they are calling him will rise to the challenge and do what's right. I'm just afraid that he has literally NO experience to be taking control of our country in it's most difficult times in 70 years. That's what makes me nervous!

I have heard him compared, more correctly, to Jimmy Carter...Pres. Carter ran on the promise of "change" just like Obama. He also ran at a time when there was war and economic difficulties...We all see how well THAT Presidency turned out for our country...Interesting comparing him to Lincoln...hmmmmmm...

No government system will ever be perfect -- it's impossible and that's been proven time and again through history. Voting isn't about faith. It's about paying attention to the issues, reading everything you can about the candidates, watching the debates, and deciding on which candidate is the most akin to your own feelings about the way a country should be run. Electing the officials in your government is a right and a privilage. This election was not just about the president -- it was also your opportunity to elect local and state officials, to make your voice heard on issues in your own county. By not voting you chose to exhibit absolutely no opinion at all. I'm upset that my sisters and father took the same stance as yourself and decided not to vote. It's like the whole sufferagist movement meant nothing... really gets me riled up. Basically you all allowed the rest of the country to choose your president (and governer, and treasurer, and city officials, and...) without any input from yourself.... It reminds me of a sea anemone rooted passively to the ocean floor and filter-feeding whatever happens to float by.

Obama isn't trying to weaken the strong or destoy the rich or discourage thrift. All he is saying is that trickle-down economic policies do not work and we need a better way of protecting the majority of wage earners (everyone who makes less than $250,000 a year, which I'm guessing will include YOU for the rest of your life. It certainly includes myself and my family and absolutely every other person that I am acquainted with).

He really has made history -- this is a hugely momentous time in our lives! We're lucky to have witnessed the cusp of what appears to be a huge paradigm shift in the mentality of our country. I for one am thrilled, hopeful, and optimistic for the first time in a decade about where this country can go. The man knows what he's talking about and has some really positive, progressive ideas. As far as ambitious politicians go: if you can't have faith in someone as open, sober, unifying, cool-headed, transparent, and intelligent as he is, then what CAN you have faith in?

yeah, Joe you're awesome. Even if you didn't vote. As for voting having to do with the suffrage movement... Long shot to left field. But yes, I think, just as South Park said McCain fans have nothing to be but wonderfully surprised and Obama-mama's fans have nothing to be but let down ("Where are my PANTS!?!")
I appreciate your opinion and your use of the first amendment right to freedom of speech. 'F' the non believers and screw the 'PC' crowd. Say what you what to whom ever you want to (unless its rude or vulgar). And you know what, if they don't like it they can pull their heads out of whatever crack they have it in where the sun don't shine and look around. We live in AMERICA, the land of the free and the home of the brave. And you sir are brave to voice your opinion, whether popular or not.

Ps- that was aimed to all the people that disagree with the sharing of opinion. If you don't like it grow up and move to France where you are wanted!!!

That sort of arrogant ignorance is exactly why the rest of the world thinks so little of Americans in general.
